Hypnosis: a Definition and Explanation
Hypnosis is a natural state, created by an overload of information (similar to the time right before falling asleep), that causes us to become hyper- suggestible, thereby providing access to the subconscious mind.
Believe it or not, we utilize only about 12% of the mind's total power. This small percentage, called the conscious mind, is comprised of reason, decision, willpower and logic. The other 88% is the subconscious mind, and is made up of primitive automatic flight-or-fight reactions (natural instincts to help man evolve and survive), and all the associations we have learned without even being aware that we are doing so. Hypnosis is an exciting and empowering tool that helps change your subconscious associations and responses into ones that better suit your present needs.
During a hypnotic state, you are consciously aware of what is going on in your surroundings. However, information enters directly into your subconscious mind without first being filtered by your critical mind. Because you are completely aware, no one is able to control you or force you to do something that you wouldn't naturally choose to do. You won't reveal dark inner secrets or dance like a chicken -- unless, of course, you want to!
You may have heard that some people aren't "hypnotizable." This simply isn't true. If you can fall asleep, then you are hypnotizable.
